What is snap reading and why is it the basis of work sampling?

The four rules of reliable snap reading
- Observation must be instantaneous. As soon as you start deliberating "what was he doing 5 seconds ago?", you are no longer doing snap reading โ you are reconstructing. The state you record is the one you see at the instant of arrival.
- The observation must be classified into a single category. If the operator is doing two things (e.g., holding a piece with one hand and reaching for a tool with the other), choose the predominant state or, better, pre-define a tie-break rule in the study protocol.
- The observer must not interact. Talking, asking, gesturing โ all of these change the state and bias the measurement. If the operator asks something, defer the answer to the end of the round.
- The observation instant must come from the random plan, not from the observer's discretion. If the observer skips an observation because "the operator is on a break", they have just introduced selection bias.
